Project Description
Pascal candle holder for St Magnus’s
The design for the Pascal candle holder is inspired from several biblical themes
The base
It is inspired from Peter’s Confession of Christ
16:13-16 pp—;Mk 8:27-29; Lk 9:18-20
Mt 16:13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
Mt 16:14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
Mt 16:15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Mt 16:16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Mt 16:17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.
Mt 16:18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
Mt 16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Mt 16:20 Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.
When Peter understood that Jesus was the Christ he was given a new name “the rock”. The understanding of Jesus being the saviour is the rock on which everything in the church is built on. The base of the candleholder will, therefore, be made to look like a rock by sandblasting the surface of the timber to give it a weathered finish.
Stem
With the Pascal candleholder meaning that Jesus is the light of the world, I looked at Lighthouses for inspiration. The base shape of the design comes from a lighthouse design. I have incorporated into the design symbolism which refers to biblical truths. The stem of the candle is taken from 1 Peter
The Living Stone and a Chosen People
1Pe 2:4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.” 7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,
“The stone the builders rejected
has become the capstone,’” 8 and,
“A stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”
They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.
1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Here it talks about God’s people being living stones built into a spiritual house. The design of the stem reflects the lighthouse construction and symbolizes the individual members of the church built and fitted together by the Holy Spirit. It will be made from Maple which is light in colour is reflect the purifying of the church by the Holy Spirit
The crown
The top of the Pascal candleholder represents two things. Its crown-like shape refects the truth that Jesus is the King of Kings.
It also has Five arches. This symbolises the five ministries in the church which is talked about in Ephesians
Eph 4:7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it says:
“When he ascended on high,
he led captives in his train
and gave gifts to men.” 9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions ? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Here it talks about how the ministries of the apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and the teacher are to prepare God people to do Gods work. It’s as if the five ministries are connected closely to Christ ( the Head) and are helping the body of people to grow upwards in faith the Jesus. Helping and releasing them to do the work which God is showing them to do.
